Fourth Sunday of Advent

Today’s gospel reading reminds us of the plan that was given unto Mary, the mother of God, and also to her husband Joseph, the patron and protector of our Church. Both had a vital role in rearing their own son, and there must have been great trust among each other and with God. This trust can be difficult to feel during the busyness and rapid movement of the holiday season. We see the picture perfect smiles on television, the happiness of families in advertisements, and we may try to mimic those same emotions. We are busy preparing our home, shopping for gifts, preparing food, and waiting for the arrival of our families. Some of us will be boarding airplanes, or driving across state lines - preparing to make a long haul - all to be a part of the Christmas festivities, but do we allow the grace of God to enter our hearts?

One observation of St. Joseph is his silence, he doesn’t utter a word in the gospels, but the liturgy of today focuses on him, his dream, and his response. He will become the provider of his family, and the protector of the church, all because his faith led his heart. He will guide the holy family through difficult journeys to fulfill the promises made for our salvation. So are you Joseph before that night, anxious and worried about the holidays? Or are you Joseph as he woke up from his sleep that next morning ready to encounter and live the Christmas promise?

Today at mass we are reminded that the light of the advent wreath symbolizes the preparation for the birth of Christ. It is through our own penance and sacrifices, that will prepare us for the magnificent event of Christmas in a few days. These sacrifices do not have to be grandeur acts, but rather simple steps of daily prayer and solitude. Let the light of the advent candle guide you; it can be key to our own wellbeing during this beautiful advent season. So give yourself today just a few minutes of peace, and that can be the time we need to share with God our gratitude, prayers, and needs. There will be time for holiday preparation, but allow the light of the advent wreath to guide our hearts towards Christmas Day.

On this final Sunday of Advent, take the time to prepare for the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and cherish the gifts that have been given to you by giving yourself a few moments of personal time. Allow the love of the Lord to enter our hearts.
