Hope in the Hopeless
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
MT 20: 26-27
The readings for this day provide a tantalizing glimpse of hope among fear and sorrow. Our society today is filled with fear and grief. Covid19 and the Stock Market crashing are tangible examples of the current headlines, hope seems a distant dream from social media and 24-hour news that provides images of death and violence, despair and desperation, the lost and lonely.
How do we find hope in the hopeless?
Matthew’s gospel provides the key:
We find hope in serving the needs of others.
We find hope in walking with the despaired and desperate.
We find hope in finding the lost, befriending the lonely.
We find hope in remembering the missing, both alive and dead.
We find hope in comforting those who are sad, those who are scared.
We find hope in defending the weak.
We find hope in protecting the ‘other. ’
We find hope in working for peace.
We find hope in fighting for justice.
How do we find hope in the hopeless?
Hope is walking with Jesus.
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
