Knock - Knock

Have you ever been hesitant to knock on a door when soliciting for a fundraiser, picking up a date, needing to talk to a teacher or extend an apology?  I have. If you have too, my hunch is that our hesitations to knock rest in doubt, insecurities and unwanted answers.

In today’s reading, Jesus tells us to knock.  This message is near the end of His Sermon on the Mount.  It’s a manifesto of sorts about life in the Kingdom of God.  A life with Him.  The short-phrased instructions Jesus lays out are an invitation. To ask. To seek. To knock.  He’s inviting us into a deeper relationship with Him through conversations and questions.

God loves to hear of our thoughts, our dreams, our goals.  He delights in the moments when we bring our gifts to Him. In doing so we are acknowledging our gifts and seeking His direction and approval. His approval is a blessing. Literally! It’s His blessing to go forward to do His work.

As humans, we sometimes over think the ‘ask and receive’.  What are we asking for? If it’s the simple request asking to do well on a test, perhaps there’s been open time to study.  If it’s to have more patience, He’s given us opportunities to practice patience.  If it’s seeking Him, He is already there, calling us to engage in conversation and a deeper relationship.  Why would I hesitate?

To ask, to seek, to knock puts us at God’s open, welcoming door. He wants us to enter again, and again, and again.  He is eager to be in conversation with us. To share His plan for us. An abundant plan.

In this season of Lent, I will replace any hesitations with a faith-filled yes to follow His plan for me.  Any space for doubt or question will be filled with faith, trust and His presence.
