WWJD - Love
In reading this passage, I’m reminded to not look for ‘the law’, how I should interpret it, question it, or act upon it. Instead, I am to see that Jesus is the fulfillment of the law. For me, this is immediately relieving and joyful.
In this story, Jesus begins by telling his disciples that His purpose is not to abolish the law or to criticize what the prophets proclaim or teach. His purpose, His intent, is to fulfill the law. The law of God. The law of Mercy, of Grace, of Love.
Jesus lived not by ‘the letter of the law’, but by the meaning of the law. He lived by the law of love. Although He followed most of the Jewish laws and customs, He acted with love and compassion, not with disregard or judgement.
For Jesus, the first two commandments are the foundation for the other 8 commandments: love of God and love of neighbor. Love should come before all else; it leads. To lead with love is to lead with grace. There is nothing greater. So if we are living within the law, we are living within His grace. Grace that puts us out of judgement. Grace that emphasizes mercy and compassion. Grace that reminds us that if we are to act as Jesus, we are to act with grace, compassion and above all - love.
